Storm Assistance

8/1/2022 (Permalink)

If you have suffered damages from a storm, then you need to be aware of FEMA. Likewise, this is a resource everyone in Southern Oregon should at least be aware of when a storm is on the way. It is the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and it provides assistance to people who's homes were damages after a natural disaster. The agency provides other types of support as well, including:

  • Emergency assistance
  • Financial assistance
  • Miscellaneous support

If you are going to take advantage of this resource, you need to understand what kind of support you can receive from them.

Emergency Assistance

When the flood waters are on the rise, you should not expect immediate help from the agency. The agency focuses on providing assistance when flooding is over, but they still can help you in the form of resources and partners. The agency has a mobile app while can provide information about emergency shelters and evacuation guidelines in your local area. If you are in need of immediate help, you should call 911 instead or your local emergency management agency. FEMA partners with certain emergency relief companies, and may be able to help you receive the support you need.

After the Storm

When the disaster is over, this is the time when The Federal Emergency Management Agency can really provide you with support. After you apply, an inspector will evaluate how severe the damage you suffered is. This should never be a substitute to your own insurance coverage, but rather a resource you use in addition to it. Along with helping you recover financially, the agency can provide medical and dental services, as well as covering funeral costs. FEMA cannot take care of all storm reparations, so it might be beneficial to research a private reconstruction company too. With the right help, you can repair and move on from any disaster that affected you.

SERVPRO of Medford/Ashland is one such company with all of the expertise and equipment needed to recover from a major flooding or natural disaster event. We suggest that you contact us in order to have a complimentary Emergency Readiness Plan (ERP) prepared and on hand just in case you ever experience the type of event where it will come in very handy. Josephine County business have mold??

5/19/2022 (Permalink)

In a typical water flooding event, if not mitigated quickly, mold can spread through a business location or a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to mitigate your mold infestation.

  • Wet Cleaning - An effective cleaning method for removing moderate to heavy residues.
  • Spray and Wipe -Effective for items that can’t withstand cleaning.
  • Foam Cleaning - Used for upholstery fabrics that might shrink or bleed if cleaned.
  • Abrasive Cleaning - Involves agitation of the surface being cleaned.
  • Immersion Cleaning - Contents are dipped into a bath of the cleaning product.

Storm and Flooding

5/19/2022 (Permalink)

Flooding in your home can cause many problems. That might sound like an understatement; however, many people do not understand what this amount of pooling water can do to their houses. First of all, flooding can come from groundwater that rises from a local river or stream. It can originate from a septic tank backup or through the less than adequate waterproofing in your basement walls. A leaking pipe or frozen pipe that bursts just about anywhere in your home and on any floor, can qualify as a flood because it causes many of the same problems. When standing water covers several rooms from a storm or malfunction, you need help.

When you see the standing water in the basement, crawlspace or lowest level of your house, whether you know the source or not, heavy pumping equipment is needed to mitigate the impending water damage.

The water begins by being absorbed into building materials and furniture such as wooden pieces and their fabrics. If the water has gotten into your basement from the first floor, it may have passed over and through a storage closet. Therefore, clothing may have been impacted as well as stored personal items, electronics, and photo albums. It has also gotten into and behind walls, under sinks and any ceilings and sub flooring.

The increased moisture level can also create a perfect environment for molds to grow with 48-72 hours if the structure is not quickly dried. Drywall that has become soaked with this liquid can start the process of breaking down. This breakdown can be noticed as a bulging and crack as well as deteriorating and falling away from the attached studs. Electrical wiring may create a hazardous situation.

If you have experienced a flood and need the help of a highly trained water damage restoration company, call SERVPRO of Grants Pass/Central Point at 541-479-2500 for assistance.

Flooding

5/19/2022 (Permalink)

Rain and flooding from a major storm in Jackson County can result in costly damage to the interior and exterior of your business. In order to protect your business, it can be valuable to know how to prevent moisture from entering your building and causing damage.

1. Create a Physical Barrier

In order to decrease the likelihood of water and mold damage to your building, it can be helpful to put a barrier between your building and the elements. A building envelope acts as a water-resistant cover and protects your business from strong winds and heavy rains. In order for the envelope to be of use, it’s often important to make sure the envelope is securely placed around your building before a storm hits.

2. Inspect Your Building Before the Storm

Rain damage can occur seemingly without warning, and it may be necessary to contact storm restoration experts to fix the damage. However, it’s often preferable to prevent damage from occurring in the first place. By inspecting your building before a storm, you are likely to notice if there are any loose shingles, small holes or other areas where water may be able to enter your building. Inspecting the building frequently will allow you to make the necessary changes that can help to prepare your property for a disaster.

3. Clear and Reposition Gutters

If your property’s gutters are clogged or are positioned too closely to your business, the likelihood of water damage and mold growth increases. In order to avoid black mold growth and other issues related to water damage, it can be useful to clear your business’s gutters before a storm. Moving your gutters to ensure the flow of water is not directed at your building’s foundation can also be helpful.

Though storms have the potential to cause major issues for a business, preventing moisture from entering the building can make damage less likely to occur. By creating a physical barrier, inspecting your property before a storm and clearing and repositioning your building’s gutters, you can help to keep your business safe from rain damage.

Hidden Water Damage

5/19/2022 (Permalink)

You know the old saying “What you can’t see, can’t hurt you,” well I don’t think they were talking about possible leaks in your home. Residential water damages are not always obvious. Sometimes, leaks can go on for months without the slightest indication.

Luckily SERVPRO of Josephine County has the right water detection equipment to help you determine what areas in your home may be affected.

Moisture Sensor-Used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and walls.

Moisture Meter-Used to determine the actual moisture contact of various materials. This also is the equipment that allows us to monitor the drying process.

Thermohygrometer-Used to measure temperature and relative humidity to calculate and create an environment most conductive to drying. When handling a contaminated loss (CAT 2 or 3), it is not only important to dry the structure, but to disinfect and often deodorize as well.

Ultra-Low-Volume (ULV) Fogger-Used to atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate. It can also inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard- to-reach areas that typical residential products and methods cannot reach.

Thermal Fogger-Used to dispense solvent- based products by creating a dense fog that consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor causing bacteria.

Early detection and treatment of water damage is the key to promoting a healthy living space and getting your domain back.

If you think you may have water damage in your home and would like SERVPRO of Grants Pass/Central Point to come out and check, call us 24/7 @ 541-479-2500

Minimize Sewage damage before help arrives

5/19/2022 (Permalink)

A sewer backup in the home can be considered an emergency if the contaminated water has the chance to spread out onto your belongings or soak into the flooring or carpet. This type of water likely contains various bacteria and viruses that can pose a danger to you and your family members if ingested or touched. There are some things you can do to minimize damages before calling a professional sewer cleanup and remediation crew to fully decontaminate the area and make it safe for you to use again.

Cleanup Process

Protective Clothing: Put on protective clothing including rubber gloves, boots, and eye-wear before attempting any sewer cleanup.

Turn Off Electricity: If the electricity distribution panel is nearby and above water, shut it off using a dry wooden stick.

Turn Off Water: Do not use water in the home, and to ensure no one accidentally turns a faucet on, it might be good to turn the water off to the whole house.

Turn Off Air Conditioning: This is to make sure no contaminated dust can circulate around the house and contaminate the whole HVAC system.
Remove Clean Items: Take all uncontaminated items away from the area.

Add Bleach to Standing Water: Feel free to add bleach to any standing water to decrease the level of contamination.

Call for Advice: If your home uses the public sewer, call the sewage department for advice, or the local health department if you have a septic system.

Call Insurance: Let your insurance company know what has happened immediately if you intend on filing a claim to cover repairs.

Call a Professional Restoration Company: Working with the professionals can help give you peace of mind that the sewer cleanup job is thorough, while saving you time and effort. The professionals can also repair structural damage, clean all of your contaminated belongings, and remove any lingering odors.

Sewer backups can result from clogged plumbing in the home, municipal issues, local flooding events, or even a flooded toilet. It’s always recommended in Josephine and Jackson Counties to play it safe when it comes to sewage messes and take extra precautions for your health by wearing protective gear, and/or working with a water damage restoration company such as SERVPRO of Grants Pass/Central Point to put your home back to normal.

4/29/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Grants Pass/Central Point will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

How to be prepared for a house fire, and what to do after

4/15/2022 (Permalink)

What Happens After a Home Fire?

If you have never had a fire incidence in your business or home, it is important to be prepared.  A fire in your home or business can be caused by a variety of things. The problem is not whether there was a fire in business or fire in home, but how to recover from fire damage. Many business or homes have been destroyed by fire damage, not because fire suppression did not take place, but because the owners did not know what to do after the fire.

Professional fire damage restoration

Once the fire has been put off, you must not wait for long before starting to put things in order. Using a good fire restoration company, you will be able to get professionals who are trained and experienced in handling fire cleanup services. They first begin by assessing the level of commercial fire damage. They board up the windows and doors that had broken by the firefighters. The importance of boarding up is to keep off intruders who could access and steal your items. Professional commercial fire restoration ensures effective board up services.

What to expect from the professional fire restoration company

If you hire a professional commercial fire damage restoration company, you can be assured of their services. These professionals use a plan to do the fire cleanup and prevent further damage that could be caused by water or the restoration process. All the items that could be repaired are salvaged and taken to their facility for specialized repair. Other items that require cleaning such as carpets could also be taken up for proper fire cleanup.

Flood water is drained from the rooms and soot damage, and smoke damage is handled effectively. Commercial fire damage lead to soot damage that results from the burning items, which cause ash and dust on the walls and vents. It has to be cleaned up to remove the dust and ash, which will allow for the repainting of the walls. You will also need to clean up smoke damage because the smoke smell is absorbed in all the porous items in the building. This smoke smell is cleaned up through deodorization and other methods.

The importance of using professional fire cleanup services

Hiring professional commercial fire damage restoration is essential because it ensures effective removal of soot damage, smoke smell, smoke damage, board up services and fire damage restoration. Finding the right fire restoration company would ensure a speedy restoration and allow you to go back to your normal life. It is important to seek the help of professionals in matters that you cannot handle on your own such as commercial fire damage because it could save you time and money.

Ready for BBQ season

4/12/2022 (Permalink)

With nice weather and summer holidays finally approaching, it’s no secret that many people will be spending their weekends and days off outside. In addition to opening up the pool and walking on the beach, BBQ’s are also going to become one of the more popular activities at homes and even businesses across the way. But, a nice grill session can turn into a devastating, even deadly fire in a matter of minutes -- which is why safety should also be a top priority during this time! To ensure you’re well prepared for a potential BBQ disaster this season, we’ve compiled a few tips and guidelines to follow.

Know Your Grill’s Safety Zone

Firing up the grill, for many, is a great experience that allows you to bring out your inner chef, while also catering to guests of your party. But far more goes into the process of cooking than just flipping a few burgers. For starters, make sure your grill isn’t positioned anywhere near your home, on a dead patch of grass, or under low-hanging trees. Regardless of what kind of grill you’re using, one spark or flame too close to another object is all it takes to start a fire. For good measure, keep your grills on cement fixtures or away from anything flammable

Keep Fire Extinguishers Nearby

Whether or not this is the first time you’re using the grill this season, make sure it’s still in operable shape for a cookout. Thoroughly clean the grates and inspect the gas line for leaks. Should a fire start from faulty lines or too much grease, you’ll need something to help extinguish the issue. A small fire extinguisher is always great to keep nearby, and can suppress an issue before it becomes unmanageable and damaging -- just make sure your fire extinguisher is appropriately rated for this particular situation.

Of course, there are always circumstances that you’re either not prepared for, or not fit to handle on your own. If you do happen to experience an issue in which your home is sustaining fire damage, immediately call your local fire department to have them take control ASAP.

SERVPRO of Medford/Ashland has been helping the community get back on their feet after fire damage for years. When something goes wrong, you’re going to need a company who can make it right. How To Spend Less On Maintenance

7/12/2021 (Permalink)

Three Ways To Keep Service Costs Low

Home maintenance costs can add up to a considerable sum. The best way to lower maintenance cost for any structural system or appliance is to handle issues sooner than later and anticipate potential problems. Most systems, such as HVAC or plumbing, can be maintained for years without major emergency incidents as long as homeowners schedule routine upkeep. Here are three of the best ways to keep service costs low and maximize the operational life of every system in a home.

1. Fix Minor Problems
It’s a good idea to start small when it comes to maintenance. Addressing issues that seem minor when they arise can help to prevent serious issues from developing down the road. In general, scheduled or preventative maintenance is more affordable than emergency repairs in terms of the cost of parts, labor and incidentals.

2. Do Preventative Maintenance
Homeowners should schedule periodic inspections of the structural systems, appliances and other aspects of a residence. Inspections may draw attention to issues that require maintenance. Cleaning components and getting the parts necessary to prevent problems from occurring down the line tends to have a lower maintenance cost than fixing broken parts and restoring damage.

3. Get Jobs Done Right
It is important to have trained professionals install, service and repair home appliances and systems such as HVAC and plumbing. Maintaining high facility management standards may cost a little more per job, but the risk of experiencing major problems that prove very costly is significantly reduced. Bonded and insured professionals also typically guarantee their work.
The longer a problem persists, the more severe it may become and the higher the maintenance cost. When it comes to structural systems and appliances at a home in Manhattan, regularly scheduled inspections, maintenance, preventative measures and timely repairs can help homeowners avoid costly emergency fixes for major problems that can cause major damage.

Preparing BEFORE The Storm

7/9/2021 (Permalink)

Making sure that your building is prepared before a storm event happens is the best way to minimize damage should such an event occur. Taking the time to make sure pre-storm inspections are completed will pay off in the long run.

Storm Water

7/9/2021 (Permalink)

It has also gotten into and behind walls, under sinks and any ceilings and sub floorings

If you have experienced a flood and need the help of a highly trained water damage restoration company, call SERVPRO of Josephine County at 541-479-2500 for assistance.

Hidden Damage

7/9/2021 (Permalink)

If you think you may have water damage in your home and would like SERVPRO of Josephine County to come out and check, call us 24/7 @ 541-479-2500

Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Grants Pass/ Central Point will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

How to Minimize Sewage Damage Before Help Arrives

2/22/2021 (Permalink)

Become Informed about FEMA's Various Types of Assistance

2/22/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Grants Pass/Central Point is one such company with all of the expertise and equipment needed to recover from a major flooding or natural disaster event. We suggest that you contact us in order to have a complimentary Emergency Readiness Plan (ERP) prepared and on hand just in case you ever experience the type of event where it will come in very handy. For more information, call us at: (541) 479-2500.

Does your Grants Pass Home Have Mold

2/12/2021 (Permalink)

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

How to prevent moisture from entering your building and causing damage

2/11/2021 (Permalink)

Skylake's Medical Center suffers from Thunderstorm causing Water Damage

2/11/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Grants Pass/Central Point and SERVPRO of Klamath and Lake Counties was called to mitigate water damage after water flooded the Skylakes Medical Center's new building that is still under construction. During the first weekend in July of this year, a thunderstorm passed through the Klamath Falls area and overwhelmed the building's water drainage capacity which resulted in extensive flooding in many parts of the four story building. SERVPRO responded to the call by bringing in large scale water dryers and an expanded crew of technicians.

The water damage was quickly contained and the medical facility was restored to be as good as new (which it is)! A big congratulations goes out to all of the personnel who worked all day every day for 8 days in order to make things good again!
